Bottom line: HALO is not one treatment method. Compare HALO 5 or H2 ZERO for filtration/conditioning, CK10 or Hybrid for true softening, and Ultra Plus RO for point-of-use drinking water. The correct choice depends on the measurable result required.

Filtration and conditioning are different from true softening

A conventional cation-exchange softener captures calcium and magnesium on resin beads. During regeneration, a sodium- or potassium-based brine releases those hardness ions to drain so that the resin can treat more water. Properly operating equipment should reduce measured hardness after treatment.

HALO’s current HALO 5 materials describe a different approach. The system combines granular and catalytic carbon, other filter media, and a final HALO ION conditioner. HALO describes the conditioner as changing how dissolved calcium and magnesium behave so they are less likely to attach as hard scale. The manufacturer’s homeowner guide is explicit that the calcium remains present and that the treated water will not test soft.

That distinction matters in daily use. Conditioning may be evaluated for scale-management goals, but it does not promise the same measured-hardness result as ion exchange. Mineral residue or spotting can still occur because the minerals remain in the water. When the goal is true softening: HALO CK10 and Hybrid

HALO’s current catalog also documents conventional softening equipment. CK10 models H-CK10-150, H-CK10-200, and H-CK10-250 use salt- or potassium-regenerated ion exchange to remove calcium and magnesium hardness. HALO Hybrid model H-HYBRID combines activated-carbon filtration with ion-exchange softening in one vessel. These products should not be confused with the conditioning mechanism used in HALO 5 or H2 ZERO.

CK10 or Hybrid may be a better fit when the target is lower measured hardness, less spotting, or the cleaning and soap-use effects associated with softened water. Their tradeoffs include brine, salt or potassium replenishment, regeneration water, a drain, power, valve programming, resin care, and model-specific flow limits. Hybrid also needs separate scrutiny of the carbon stage’s service life and supported claim.

A proposal should state untreated hardness, treated-hardness target, resin volume, efficient programmed capacity, salt dose, reserve, expected regeneration frequency, service-flow basis, pressure loss, drain and power requirements, and separate media/resin warranty terms. Do not select CK10 or Hybrid solely because HALO 5 conditioning did not meet a true-softening objective; size and document the softener as its own treatment system.

What the HALO 5 certification language means

HALO’s March 2025 specification sheet says HALO 5 models H5-100, H5-125, H5-150, and H5-200 are WQA tested and certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 for material safety and NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 for lead-free compliance. The same sheet states that the HALO 5 series is not WQA tested or certified for contaminant-reduction performance or structural integrity. It also says the HALO ION scale inhibitor conditioner is not WQA certified.

Those statements are not contradictory. NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 addresses health-effects requirements for materials and components that contact drinking water; NSF/ANSI/CAN 372 addresses lead-content requirements. They do not prove that a complete treatment system reduces chlorine, chloramine, lead, PFAS, pesticides, volatile organic compounds, microorganisms, or any other named substance. A material-safety listing is not a performance-reduction listing.

The current WQA product record likewise explains that products certified to NSF/ANSI/CAN 61 have not thereby been evaluated for contaminant-reduction performance. HALO’s own collateral describes the functions intended for its individual media, but manufacturer descriptions are not substitutes for complete-system performance certification. Before relying on a reduction claim, request the full model number, current certifier listing, rated conditions, capacity, sampling method, and replacement trigger. If those materials do not substantiate a named claim for the complete proposed model, the proposal should be limited to the more modest functions its evidence supports.

HALO 5 sizing, flow, and Houston water questions

HALO’s specification sheet lists several HALO 5 tank and connection sizes and warns that the system is intended for cold, potable water, should not exceed 80 psi, and should not be used on microbiologically unsafe or unknown-quality water without adequate disinfection. It also says conditioning results may vary above 25 grains per gallon hardness. Those are screening limits, not a finished design.

A Houston-area assessment should establish:

  • the exact public water system, utility district, or private-well source;
  • the household’s documented treatment goal and any current report or test result;
  • whether the utility uses chlorine, chloramine, or another disinfectant at the relevant point in time;
  • hardness, pressure, pipe size, likely simultaneous fixture demand, and the manufacturer’s design-flow data;
  • clean and in-service pressure loss at the expected flow;
  • drain, bypass, electrical, weather, flood, and service-clearance requirements;
  • whether irrigation, pools, hose bibs, or other high-demand branches should bypass treatment;
  • the startup, flushing, commissioning, and post-installation verification plan.

Do not size a media tank from occupancy alone. HALO’s collateral associates system capacities with occupancy over ten years, but a buyer still needs hydraulic data and treatment-contact requirements for the home. The largest connection or valve is not necessarily the flow at which a target treatment result is achieved.

For municipal water, removing disinfectant at the point of entry also changes conditions in the home’s plumbing. CDC notes that whole-home removal of chlorine or another disinfectant can permit more microbial growth downstream. That does not make point-of-entry carbon inappropriate; it means plumbing hygiene, proper installation, flushing, monitoring, and on-time service must be part of the decision. Houston Public Works reports that its municipal system is regulated and holds TCEQ’s “Superior” rating, so a HALO proposal should address a defined household goal rather than rely on fear-based claims that all local tap water is unsafe.

“Maintenance-free” needs a lifecycle definition

HALO prominently markets HALO 5 as “maintenance free,” but its own guide describes automatic backwashing or regeneration to reset the media bed and avoid channeling. The guide says the H5-100 may reach end of life at approximately one million gallons or when treated water tests positive for chlorine. It also provides programming, vacation bypass, flushing, and warranty-service instructions.

A more accurate buyer interpretation is that HALO 5 may avoid routine cartridge changes and salt refilling associated with some other systems, while still requiring water, drainage, monitoring, correct programming, leak awareness, eventual media or tank action, and qualified warranty service. Automatic upkeep is still upkeep. The phrase does not mean the system has no operating conditions, inspections, service events, or end of life.

Ask the proposed provider to define:

  1. the backwash frequency and estimated water use for the exact model and settings;
  2. the tests or observations used to identify breakthrough or end of life;
  3. who performs programming changes, sanitation, media service, and leak diagnosis;
  4. what happens if water chemistry, disinfectant concentration, use, or pressure changes;
  5. which parts and media are stocked and how quickly they can be obtained;
  6. whether any labor, freight, handling, disposal, or diagnostic charges are excluded.

Do not confuse the Ultra Plus membrane rating with system production

HALO’s H-RO-PLUS Ultra Plus documentation identifies a nominal 50-gallon-per-day membrane. The same installation manual gives a 20.1-gallon-per-day daily production rate, and the current NSF/ANSI 58 listing also reports 20.1 gpd for the complete H-RO-PLUS system. These numbers describe different things and must not be presented as though the certified system delivers 50 gallons per day.

Actual RO production and available tank water depend on feed pressure, temperature, dissolved solids, membrane condition, and tank backpressure. The manual specifies a 40–80 psi operating range, recommends pretreatment when hardness exceeds 7 grains per gallon, and includes additional feed-water limits. It calls for regular filter and membrane replacement, system flushing, leak checks, and periodic confirmation that treatment performance remains acceptable.

The NSF listing associates the exact H-RO-PLUS model with named NSF/ANSI 58 reduction claims under listed conditions. That evidence establishes the model’s tested scope; it does not establish that every incoming Houston water profile needs those reductions, that output will be identical in every home, or that Water Filtration Houston currently offers H-RO-PLUS. Do not place this model in a proposal until availability, current components, installation experience, replacement supply, and warranty handling are confirmed.

Warranty questions belong in the quote

HALO’s current homeowner guide contains detailed conditions and exclusions for HALO 5 coverage. These include pressure, temperature, installation, source-water, approved-component, purchase-channel, registration, and original-owner requirements. It also distinguishes tank, control-head, media, and HALO ION terms and excludes or limits certain labor, freight, handling, repair, and consequential costs.

A proposal should attach the current warranty for the exact model and answer:

  • Who is the warrantor: manufacturer, seller, or installer?
  • Does the product require purchase through a specified channel?
  • Who registers the equipment, and when?
  • Which tank, valve, media, membrane, cartridge, labor, freight, and trip charges are covered?
  • What water pressure, chlorine, temperature, source, installation, and maintenance conditions apply?
  • Who is permitted to diagnose or perform warranty work?
  • Is installer workmanship coverage separate from the manufacturer warranty?
  • What happens if a provider stops servicing the product?

A “10-year warranty” headline is not enough because different components can have different terms and exclusions. Current documents should control over a summary on a sales page.
